3 Bible Stories To Teach Your Kids About Humility

All parents, regardless of religious affiliation, want their children to grow into good people of strong character. There are many aspects of a strong character, but most people agree that someone with strong character is compassionate, respectful, confident, responsible, disciplined, and humble. Teaching our children to have and express these qualities takes years of lessons, especially when explaining the complexity of humility.

Some people misinterpret humility to mean having low self-esteem, but it really means having a modest view of your importance. Many religions and spiritual belief systems teach the importance of this modest self-understanding, including Christianity. If you want to teach your kids about humility, there are three Bible stories that can help you do so.

The Story of Moses

This story can teach any child that humility is an important quality to have, especially as a leader. Moses is born to two enslaved Hebrews in Egypt, but he is later adopted into the house of Pharaoh. This status does not, however, make him prideful. In fact, he willingly spends his adult life with his enslaved brethren until he is cast out for murdering an abusive Egyptian guard.

He then spends years in the wilderness as a shepherd before God calls him to deliver his people from slavery, a call he tries to deny because he doesn’t think himself worthy. However, his humility is one of the reasons God chooses Moses for this task.

The Story of Ruth

Another key Biblical figure that teaches us humility is Ruth. After losing her husband and father-in-law and having no sons to advocate for her in a patriarchal society, her mother-in-law tells Ruth to return to her native land to find another husband.

Refusing to do so, Ruth accompanies her mother-in-law to her own native land, where she works in a relative’s field. Her role as the sole provider for the little family doesn’t make her prideful, nor does her eventual position as the wife of a wealthy landowner. She remains respectful of herself and others throughout her life’s changes, making her a great example of humility.

The Story of Jesus

Jesus is a central figure for many of his teachings and the example he shows us, including in humility. Jesus is said to be the son of God, and yet he lives his entire life as a lowly carpenter. He never demands wealth and prestige, even though the miraculous healings he performs could easily afford him both. Instead, he remains humble throughout his life, death, and resurrection, showing us we can do the same.

There are many Bible stories you can use to teach kids about humility, but these three highlight the importance of humility in different lives and circumstances.
