Description

Special Note: As a general rule, we do not endorse any English bibles besides the King James Version. But we feel that pre-1611 English bible translations are and were historically significant in the development of the 1611 Authorized King James Bible. For this reason, we are proud to offer this rare facsimile edition of the 1560 Geneva Bible to our customers.

The Deluxe Facsimile 1560 Geneva Edition
The 1560 Geneva Bible is the work of religious leaders exiled from England to Geneva, Switzerland, after 1553. It was the first Bible in English to divide the scriptures into numbered verses. It was the most widely read and influential English Bible of the 16th and 17th centuries. Shakespeare quoted the Geneva Bible more than 5,000 times in his plays. The images contained within the Bible were produced by hand-created woodcuts. The marginal notes consisting of about 300,000 words or one-third of the text was key to its popularity. The marginal notes often reflected Calvinistic and Protestant reformation influences. These notes were not yet accepted by the Church of England and led to the Bible's demise. King James I considered the Geneva Bible "seditious" and made its ownership a felony. The Pilgrims and Puritans brought the Geneva Bible to America. This replica edition has been digitally re-mastered and slightly enlarged for easier reading, but none of the content has been altered. It contains all 80 books of the Bible within the Old Testament, Apocrypha and the New Testament.

The Geneva Bible was the “Bible of the Protestant Reformation”, and the Bible of the Puritans and Pilgrims. It was the first Bible taken to America, brought over on the Mayflower. The Geneva Bible is the Bible upon which America was founded. Most early American colonists, who were fleeing the religious oppression of the Anglican Church (Church of England), originally wanted little to do with the King James Bible of the Anglican Church.

What makes this book so special?
Textually, the Geneva Bible offered a number of radical never-before-seen changes: It was the first Bible in English to add numbered verses to each chapter of scripture. Also, the Geneva was the first Bible to introduce easier-to-read “Roman Style Typeface” rather than the “Gothic Blackletter Style Typeface” which had been used exclusively in earlier Bibles. Another curious innovation; the Geneva was the first “Study Bible” with extensive commentary notes in the margins. It was produced by John Calvin, John Knox, Myles Coverdale, John Foxe, & other English refugees in Geneva, Switzerland… fleeing the persecution of Roman Catholic Queen “Bloody” Mary in England. Mary would not tolerate the Protestant Geneva Bible, which proclaimed the Pope an “antichrist” in its commentary notes. The Geneva Bible is the only Bible ever able to outsell and exceed the popularity of the King James Bible, as it did in the early 1600’s until its printing ceased in 1644.

The Deluxe Edition of the 1560 Geneva Facsimile Reproduction measures approximately 11 inches tall by 8.75 inches wide by 3.25 inches thick.  It is printed on 100% acid-free, archival grade, heavy cream paper.  The Deluxe Edition is bound in the finest grade of deep chocolate full-grain calf leather over thick wood boards. These facsimiles are exactly identical to the genuine original 1560 First Edition / First Printing of the Geneva Bible and make for an incredible collector's item or an unforgettable gift.
